Hitler 1936-1945: Nemesis, by Ian Kershaw, Penguin
The book's intention is to make clear the often conflicting dynamics that led from the seemingly stable and successful Germany of 1937 to the brutalised military state of the 1940s. At the heart of the book lies Hitler's decision to unleash the annihilatory war in the East and the terrifying new universe this brought into being.

Ian Kershaw is Professor of Modern History at the University of Sheffield. He was the historical adviser to the two BBC series The Nazis: A Warning from History and War of the Century. His previous books include The Hitler Myth: Image and Reality in the Third Reich and The Nazi Dictatorship.
